150 years ago today, Abraham Lincoln gave a speech on what apparently now is Government Square in downtown Cincinnati, a couple minute's walk from where I work.

The following link is to an interesting article about the importance of this speech to Lincoln's future. The author makes a good case about how truly important it was and how it may be under-appreciated today.

Here's also a link to the actual text of the speech, which was quite long.

captainrim,

This is why this is my favorite Civil War forum, because of members like yourself, posting such wonderful and informative new sources.

Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to do so.

I have learned something new tonight and I very much appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Abraham Lincoln speech, Cincinnati, 9-17-1859

The Cooper Union speech is better known, is better known in history, probably because, it resonates better through the ages. The Cincinnatti speech seems specific to a political locality, whereas the New York speeck is generally cast for a more national audience.
I do not know that it is true that the Cincinnatti speech received more national press coverage than from New York, it seems counter intuitive.
