Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1822, frontier duty, Mexican war.
War Service February 1861 Col. of 7th US Infantry, Falling Waters, August 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/1st Divn/IV Corps at Seven Pines (w), Malvern Hill, defences of Washington, administrative duties, commanded depots in Grant's Overland campaign.
Brevet Promotions Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865.
 
As a lieutenant colonel, he was responsible for Fort Abercrombie, Dakota Territory, in 1858. The fort was officially abandoned by the Army in February 1878. The town of Abercombie, North Dakota, is named for him. Another fort was named for him in Alaska during WWII.
