As a lieutenant colonel, he was responsible for Fort Abercrombie, Dakota Territory, in 1858. The fort was officially abandoned by the Army in February 1878. The town of Abercombie, North Dakota, is named for him. Another fort was named for him in Alaska during WWII.

If you go to the Forgotten Forts postings, you'll see some photos I've taken of today's preserved and WPA restored state historical society facility.
