A Terrible Wound at Chickamauga

The worst part about reading Civil War history, is those descriptions of horrible wounds.
Probably the worst one I have read, was a Confederate at Culps Hill. He had the back of his head/skull shot away, sat with his back against a three, but was still alive and was vomiting and making gag noises when som Union soldiers tried give him water..
Reading that was not especially pleasuring. :frown:

What a handsome young man he had been.

I was very taken with this:

"To the last, the first response came from Hon. G.F. Bowles, of Natchez, a negro, a representative of Adams county; he sent $25. The next came from Mrs. Sarah E. Marshall, from Bartow-on-the Sound, Westchester County, N.Y. She sent $10 to me through Rev. Dr. Stratton, of Natchez, Miss., and $10 direct to me from her home."

That the Negro had such mercy in his heart and Mrs. Marshall was so moved in hers.

Brings to mind the story of Sir Archibald Hector McIndoe, a plastic surgeon who was successful treating RAF pilots and crews during the Battle of Britain and WW II. Amazing the injuries soldiers can suffer and not only survive but live with.
Regards
David
