A slave William Wells Brown was in the ownership of a slavetrader named Walker (first name not given). While working for Walker Brown overfilled the wine glasses of some of Walkers's guests, and he could see the fury in Walker's eyes. The nest day Walker gave Brown a note and $1 bill, and instructed him to take the note to the sheriff's office. Unable to read he asked another black what it said. The note instructed the sheriff to give a whipping to the notes bearer. He saw a free black about his size and convinced him to go pick up a trunk from the sheriff for him and gave him the note and $1. After the man came back from the beating, Brown gave him all the money he had about 50 cents. The man gave Brown the note from the sheriff saying he had gave him 20 lashes. Brown went back to Walker and feigned crying, saying he had never received such a beating.

Brown concluded his account of the affair "The incident shows how slavery made its victims lying and mean, for which vices it afterwards reproaches them, and uses them as arguments to prove they deserve no better fate"
