I saw this at a museum today. The signage says it is a 'presentation grade' Model 1841 Springfield Musket captured by a Union soldier. It belonged to a Southern Militia unit.

The signage claims the inscription says: "presented to 1st comp Jefferson Grenadiers. Capt. Christman." However, I could not made out the inscription through the glass. The brass plate seemed to have an eagle at the top and some writing I could not make out. You can see the 10 stars but there are additional stars out of the photograph. This was an unconverted flintlock. I am not sure where the Jefferson Grenadiers are from.

Looks like another bogus museum piece.

The US 1841 was the so called Mississippi rifle and it had a brass patch box with brass mountings. It would have to be some other model of US musket like the US 1835/40 which was the last of the flintlocks. Is that a brass butt plate or is it iron? The flintlock US military muskets were iron mounted to my knowledge.
