A most lopsided victory, the Battle of Richmond Kentucky.

Today I read a magazine article about the Battle of Richmond Kentucky. General Edmund Kirby Smith won a lopsided victory. So this made me wonder why he was sent to the Trans-Mississippi Theater. Was sending him there a reward or was it done to punish him? Any thought if keeping him in the Western Theater would have been a better use of him?

Because of the problems in east Tennessee, no one liked being assigned there (and by extension, eastern Kentucky as well). It was a thankless job, trying to deal with the Unionists and dissident population.
