As a newbie to ACW reenactment, and being only interested in becoming a field musician (Drum and Fife, or Bugle), i was wondering how i should (eventually) equip myself? I am given to understand there will be kit for me to borrow to begin with, and my new potential comrades have been most eager to prevent me from rushing in and buying kit before my first show, which is excellent advice i think, and well recieved, but i am after some knowledge beforehand. I have ''googled it'', (how i ended up here) and found many pictures of Field Musicians of all types and both sides, and since i'm leaning toward Union, i'd like some information, details being sometimes hard to see in the pictures.
For example, i have found three seperate types of peaked cap for sale at one Sutler's, those being General Issue Kepi, Forage Cap, and ''McDowell'', all, as you know, varying in style. Have any of them a specific time period, or type of unit? The same question applies to upper body wear. Are the Sack and Frock Coats ubiquitous throughout the war? Frock Coats seem very frequent in pictures of musicians, but then so do Shell Jackets. I suspect it may depend on the Arm or Regiment to which the musician belonged. Or maybe it was a case of being issued what was to hand? Not all of the pictures i found had any explaination.
I will, of course, abide by whatever goes in the unit i eventually join, but i'm curious, and after all, this is just one of the things a forum is for, isn't it?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kindest regards,
Adrian Rosenlund
