Nast's cartoon speaks to the United States very high ideal that all are created equal. We are a nation based in an ideal, not an ethnic, tribal, religious or linguistic affinity. It is a very high ideal, and we fail to live up to it all the time. Sometimes we fail spectacularly. Yet that remains our ideal.
