If anyone wants to read a book about a early abolitionists movements in the Midwest, they should considers reading Remember the Distance that Divides Us, by Marcia J Heringa Mason. Mason uses the family letter of Elizabeth Margaret Chandler to show how this young woman supported freedom for all. Elizabeth Chandler joined with the well-known Michigan abolitionist and suffragette the courageous Laura Smith Havilland to form the first antislavery society in Michigan. The two of them also formed The Raisin River Institute to educate young blacks.
