William C. Oates, commander of the 15th Alabama, best known for their charges against the 20th Maine at Little Round Top. "In 1898, he received a brigadier general's commission from President William McKinley, and he commanded three different brigades during the short war. "I am now a Yankee General, formerly a Rebel Colonel, and right each time!" he exclaimed with delight. He served diligently and patiently in Georgia and Pennsylvania, all the while hoping to command Alabama troops and be placed in combat, but the war ended before any transfer to the theaters of war could be enacted."

(And please note that for once I have answered both aspects of the question! I usually omit one or the other, which always leads to no little frustration when it comes to getting credits, or better getting no credits at all! :D)

Edit - Players have submitted sources in support of the contention that, at different times, Oates commanded both the 15th and the 48th Alabama.

Since the question only asked for the identification of one regiment, I will accept either one of these as a correct answer.
