1. What is this brigade with it's state name ? The First Vermont Brigade ("Old Brigade"). Organized in October 1861; comprised of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Vermont Infantry Regiments. After the Battle of The Wilderness (May 5-7, 1864), the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery Regiment (formerly the 11th Vermont Infantry) was added to the brigade.
The Brigade suffered the highest combat fatalities of any brigade in the history of the United States Army with some 1,172 killed in action.
At the Battle of The Wilderness, losses by the brigade totaled 1,269 killed, wounded, and missing in less than 12 hours of fighting. After Cold Harbor (June 1, 1964), the brigade, in less than one month of fighting, had been reduced from 2,850 men to less than 1,200.
2. What general (and native son) was tasked with organizing this unit ? MG William F. "Baldy" Smith. Smith was born in St. Albans, Vermont.
