Hi,
Can anybody tell me if the 8th Va. Cav. was under Bradly T. Johnson or MacCausland at the battle Of Monocacy? The Reg. History has them with MacCausland. The Park Rangers at Monocacy said they were with Johnson.
My gg grandfather was wounded on the 9th of July and captured on the 10th. When did Johnson leave Monocacy for Baltimore? I have all of grandpa's war records but it doesn't tell this.
Thanks for any help.

Martin, welcome to the site.

I'm afraid I can't answer your specific question. I did attend a lecture about the battle of Monocacy about a year ago, and my notes on the lecture are posted on the Eastern Theater board. Interesting battle, particularly when you consider how far the Confederates were able to advance toward Washington before anyone in the Union army knew they were coming. Unfortunately, the lecture did not get so deep into detail as to discuss the actions of individual regiments.

It was Bradley T. Johnson's brigade. McCausland's brigade usually consisted of the 14th, 16th, 17th, and 22nd Virginia Cavalries. Johnson commanded the former brigade of William E. Jones, of which the 8th VA had been part of for about a year, since immediately after Gettysburg, when the brigade was constituted with the 8th and 21st VA Cavalry, as well as a bunch of cavalry battalions.
