Though it saw a number of invasions begin and end, this (present day) Virginia mountain gap only saw one true, but small, battle in early 1862. The victorious force was led by a future US President. Name the gap and President.

Colonel James A. Garfield defeated a Confederate garrison around Pound Gap on March 16, 1862

Oh, that's wrong...not a Virginia mountain gap...hum...

Edit - As you thought, Fox's Gap and Rutherford Hayes are not the correct answers. This was one of our tougher questions.

Welcome to the trivia game, anyway, LCYingling3rd. Hope you'll come back and play again.

Fox's Gap, one of the gaps in South Mountain, near Boonsboro, Maryland; Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893), Lt. Col., 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, later 19th President of the United States.
The 23rd Ohio was the first regiment to encounter the Confederates there at what became known as the Battle of Boonsboro Gap or the Battle of South Mountain, September 14, 1862. In the ranks under Hayes was another future President, William McKinley (1843-1901), 25th President.

Edit - Fox's Gap is in present day Maryland.

Big Horse Gap
Rutherford B. Hayes

Battle of Pearisburg

Edit - You're correct that Rutherford B. Hayes was present at the Battle of Pearisburg and Big Horse Gap is in the same county, though I'm not sure how close it is to the town. But the question stated that the future president led the victorious force, and the Union was not victorious at Pearisburg.

Pound Gap in Wise County, VA! March of 1862 General James A. Garfield, USA skirmished with Confederates holding the pass, and drove them off. The gap is a sort of mountain gateway twixt Virginia and Kentucky...

Edit - Correct, RedRover. Welcome to the trivia game.

Hope you'll come back and play again.
