U.S. Grant's political patron was from a powerful political family.

1. Who was Grant's patron? What office did he hold?
2. Grant's patron's brother was also a prominent politician who co-founded a company that eventually became a firm that exists to this day. Who was he, what was the name of the company he founded, and what is the name of the company's modern successor?

bonus:
On 1st October 1995, Grant faced Lee again. The engagement took place in an inner city area of Liverpool, England. Grant naturally wore blue, Lee wore black and white (which make gray when mixed!).

1) Who were Grant and Lee on this particular day?
2) Who won?

1. Elihu Benjamin Washburne. Congressman from Illinois.
2. Cadwallader C Washburn,
Minneapolis Milling Company (
founded by Illinois congressman Robert Smith and acquired by Cadwallader Washburn soon after)
General Mills, Inc.

Bonus:
On 1st October 1995 at Goodison Park, Liverpool, Everton played Newcastle United in the English Premier League. The Everton Team, the Blues, included Tony Grant and the Newcastle team, the Magpies, black and white, included Rob Lee. Newcastle won 3-1 with Lee scoring the 3rd goal from the penalty spot, so Lee won.

Can I answer? 😅

1. Elihu Washburn
2. Cadwallader Colden Washburn. CC founded the Minneapolis Mill Company, which lives on as General Mills.

Bonus

1. Cory Grant was a soccer player for Everton and Rob Lee played for Newcastle United.
2. This time, Lee won, with Newcastle winning by a 3-1 socre.

Edit - You're allowed to answer your own question, though as a general rule I prefer that players not do so. It causes confusion for me when I go to post the scores to my spreadsheet.

It's a good thing you got 10 points credit for posting the question, since you failed to answer one of the five parts.

Main question
1A. Elihu Washburne
1B. U. S. Congressman
2A. Cadwallader Washburn (who for some reason spelled his last name without an e)
2B. Washburn-Crosby Company
2C. General Mills

Bonus: I feel safe in saying that the Grant and Lee who faced each other in October 1995 were not Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, both of whom had been dead for more than a century.

I thought perhaps the blue might refer to the Everton Football Club, but their manager in 1995 was not named Grant (or Lee), so that shoots that guess down. I can't come up with any others.

1. Elihu B. Washburne (1816-1887). Washburne was the Dean of the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1863 to 1869. He served briefly as United States Secretary of State in 1869, then became Minister to France from 1869 to 1877.
2. Cadwallader C. Washburn (1818-1882). Shortly after its founding, Washburn acquired the Minneapolis Milling Company. By 1866, he had opened the first flour mill in Minneapolis. In 1877, with new partner John Crosby (1828-1887), the company was renamed the Washburn Crosby Company, which- together with several other regional millers- became General Mills in 1928.

1) Elihu Benjamin Washburne (September 23, 1816 – October 22, 1887) was a member of the US House of Representatives and also was Sec. of State.
2) Cadwallader Colden Washburn (April 22, 1818 – May 14, 1882) built Washburn "B" Mill and later Washburn "A" Mill which evolved into modern day General Mills

Bonus to follow 1995? maybe

Primary Questions:

1
. Elihu Benjamin Washburne, Congressman (U.S. House of Representatives)

2
. Cadwallader Colden Washburn (Ehihu's brother), acquired the Minneapolis Milling Company in 1856; in 1877, the mill entered into a partnership with John Crosby to form the Washburn-Crosby Company; the name of the company's modern successor is General Mills, created in 1928.

Bonus Question: Still working on this one; looks to be a sporting event of some kind, but haven't nailed it down yet.

Regular Question:
1. Elihu Washburne
2. Major General Cadwallader C. Washburn, Minneapolis Mill Company, General Mills

Edit - You correctly answered four parts of the regular question, but there was a fifth part.

I can't give you a full 10 points credit. For getting four out of five, you get partial credit of five points.
