Bonus:

The doctor was Dr. Edwin Latimer, his brother the youthful Major Thomas W. Latimer, who died August 1st, short of his 20th birthday.

Other sources give the age of the amputated brother as 17 and the name of the doctor as Dr. Thomas Latimer

Regular question:
You are Martin Van Buren Bates.
Source: wikipedia

Wikipedia and Find a Grave - and several other sources Google offered me - list Bates' birthyear as 1837, not 1845. With the latter, he would have been only 16 years old at the start of the war - in my opinion too young to be a teacher. The other clues fit though.

How cool would have been an entire regiment of giants? :D

I'm afraid I have to pass the bonus by this time - unless I have a sudden inspiration how to search for that answer. So far, any combination of key words is resulting in nothing remotely helpful to find the answer. :frown:

1) Martin Van Buren Bates

I have checked several web sites that listed Bate's family members names and dates of birth and deaths and found not one who was at Gettysburg let alone wounded and died. I look forward to the answer.

Henry Clay Thruston.

But I cheated and googled it.

Edit - The good news is that players are allowed to use any resources at their disposal, so using Google is not cheating.

The bad news is that although Thruston was a giant among men, he was from Texas, not Kentucky, so he is not the correct answer to this question.

I got a lead on the bonus question! But still no attestable answer. :frown:

The Confederate officer whose arm was amputated and who died approx. one month later (on August 1st) was the so-called "Boy Major" Joseph W. Latimer (source, page 7). However, the site doesn't state the brother's name.
According to Find a Grave, Joseph had an older brother named Charles William Latimer but I have found nothing that points even remotely to Charles Latimer having been a surgeon.
In this list of Confederate staff officers Joseph Latimer is mentioned - and right beneath him a Thomas Latimer as assistant surgeon. I have been unable to ascertain a familial relation between Joseph and Thomas though. :frown:

Maybe after having slept over it...

Main question: Martin Van Buren Bates

Bonus: Thomas Latimer

I had the devil of a time finding the name of Joseph W. Latimer, the "Boy Major," whose arm was amputated at Gettysburg and who died on August 1, 1863.

But the question's not asking for his name. It's asking for the name of his brother who performed the amputation.

I presume that the brother's last name would also have been Latimer. I did find a source indicating that Thomas Latimer was named surgeon in charge of the Robertson Hospital in Richmond in 1864. I can't find any source saying that he was Joseph's brother or that he was the surgeon who amputated Joseph's arm, but he's the only Confederate surgeon named Latimer I've got, so I'm going with him.

Friday question - Martin Van Buren Bates

Friday bonus - I'm stumped as to who the brother that performed the amputation is, although I've provided an answer. Please bear with me. According to Bloodstains of Gettysburg - BLUESTAR Forensic (page 4):
"The hospital was specifically for the artillery battery commanded by Major Joseph Latimer. The young major was known as the “Boy Major”. He was wounded during the fighting on Brenner’s hill and was taken to the Lady Farm where his brother, a Confederate surgeon, amputated his right arm. Major Latimer died during the retreat following the battle on August 1, 1863.

According to Find A Grave, Joseph Latimer had only 1 brother, Charles William Latimer but I can find absolutely nothing that indicates he was ever a sugeon or doctor nor in the Confederate or Union army during the Civil War.

On the other hand, on the website Applications to the Manassas Chapter of UDC and its Index to the Applications (page 3) shows Mrs. Rose Lee Latimer with her elegibility based on being the "Niece of Major J. W. Latimer & Dr. Edwin Latimer, surgeon from Col. Andrews Battalion."

Colonel Andrews Battalion of artillery was commanded by Major Joseph Latimer but I cannot find any sources that indicate Joseph and Edwin being brothers. Based on the information I found, I'll guess that Dr. Edwin Latimer would be the correct answer.
