Though my father was a politician I was a Forty-Eighter. I was transported to the other side of the world, and later traveled to New York. When the war started I recruited a company, fought at Bull Run and recruited a lot more men - many of whom didn´t return home. After the war I became a politician, too. I crossed several oceans in my life but I managed to drown in a river. Who am I?

Henry Bohlen

Edit - Bohlen died in a river crossing, but it happened in 1862, so he could not have become a politician after the war.

Whoa, what a difficult question!! First I was mislead by the term Forty-Eighter and always thought of someone with German descent. But Carl Schurz did not drown in a river, d***** :D

Excellent question again, I learned a lot while researching!!

So my guess is: Thomas Francis Meagher

What a life, btw!! Our authors should think about witing novels about him!
