Walt Whitman.
Male Nurse. After New Year's Day, 1863, Whitman became a volunteer male nurse in the army hospitals in Washington, D.C. He worked in this capacity for the duration of the war.

Edit - The first of the two indicated sources mentions that Whitman served as a nurse, which was the desired answer. Players are reminded that the title of the thread can sometimes be an important clue to what the desired answer should be.

However, the second of the two indicated sources does not mention the word "nurse," but says only that he was a civil servant and volunteer visitor in Union army hospitals, so I am giving credit for that answer as well.
