It's so interesting to have an ancestor who fought in the Civil War and to follow him in different battles. My ancestor was James Harvey Stephenson who joined the Confederacy in Giles County,TN. In his pension,he claimed he joined Company K., First Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. The First Tennessee Cavalry later became the 6th Tennessee Cavalry and at the end of the war was called Col. James T. Wheeler's 1st Tennessee Cavalry. At Chickamauga,on the first day the 6th Tennessee fought under Col.Wheeler and on the second day the 6th Tennessee Cavalry was with Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Here is a history of the 6th Tennessee:

That's very interesting.

I still enjoy your thread from last year about Forrest & Col. Wheeler:

My James Harvey Stephenson could have easily been with the 11th Tennessee Cavalry. Two companies of David W. Holman's Battalion of Partisan Rangers were organized in Giles Co,TN. One company was organized by James W. Rivers in Giles Co,Tennessee where my James Harvey Stephenson lived. In his pension filed in Ellis County,Texas in 1899,he claimed he was recruited by a Captain "Rivars" and belonged to company K, 1st Tennessee Cavalry. I assume this to be Captain James Rivers.

General Robert E. Lee issued orders abolishing the partisan rangers and required them to join the regular Confederate Army.
Nathan Bedford Forrest issued an order in Columbia,Tennessee in 1863 creating the 11th Tennessee Cavalry which included Gordon's and Rivers companies of Holman's Battalion.
At any rate, the 6th Tennessee Cavalry was in Armstrong's Brigade at Chickamauga and the 11th Tennessee was with Forrest's Brigade

A book called "The Descendants of Archibald Steele" had my James Harvey serving in Co.K,1st Tennessee Cavalry under Col James Wheeler. One of the Steele's married James Montgomery in Limestone Co,Al. My James H. Stephenson married a daughter of James Montgomery in Limestone Co,Alabama in 1852.
This is all very confusing, but I am going with the 6th Tennessee Cavalry as the regiment of my James Stephenson.
