Someone asked the question about the 5th Indiana Infantry and if this was a Civil War regiment. I checked both civilwararchive.com and ranger95.com (both have online versions of Dyer's Compendium). Anyway, the infantry regiments start off with the 6th Infantry. There is a 5th Cavalry and a 5th Independent Artillery battery, but no 5th Infantry. Was one never recruited so as to avoid confusion with the other 5th regiments? Or was the data for the 5th infantry lost at some point? Thanks if anyone can help with information.

In case anyone looks at this later, Illinois did the same thing. The 1st through the 6th Illinois Regiments served in the Mexican-American war and were skipped in the Civil War numbering.

Additionally, while there is a 5th Illinois Battery, there exists no other numbered Illinois battery. Strange!
