First Lieutenant and brevet Lieutenant Colonel William Neil Dennison served in Batteries A and G of the 2nd United States Artillery - he was the son of Ohio Governor and Postmaster General of the United States William Dennison, Jr.

The son of another cabinet member also served as an artillery officer during the war. Colonel William Henry Seward, Jr., the youngest son of Secretary of State William H. Seward, was the commander of the 9th New York Heavy Artillery, fighting at North Anna and Cold Harbor in 1864.

There are a number of sons of the members of Lincoln's Cabinet who had ties to artillery during and after the war. There may be others, but I found two sons of Cabinet members who served as officers in artillery units during the Civil War:
  • BG William Henry Seward, Jr., Lt Col of the 9th New York Heavy Artillery (Son of Secretary of State, William H Seward) wiki/William_H._Seward_Jr.
  • Lt. Fleming Bates, Captain Von Phul's Company of Missouri Light Artillery, CSA (Son of Attorney General, Edward Bates) https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=8508458
Since I have never heard of Capt. Von Phul's Co of Missouri Lt Artillery CSA, I'll go with William Henry Seward, Jr Lt Col of the 9th New York Heavies. :D

William Neil Dennison - I see there are some different answers. Hoosier's word is final.

Edit - Lacking any clear definition of just how well-known an artillery unit should be in order to be considered "famous," I will give credit for every answer that named someone who was the son of a member of Lincoln's cabinet and served in any artillery unit.

Which means all of the answers that were submitted will be counted as correct.
