John A. McDowell, brother of Malcolm McDowell who was paymaster of the Army of Tennessee. Malcolm was implicated in a scheme to broker cotton deals across enemy lines to profit political allies. The third McDowell brother was Irvin.

Edit - I had to scroll way down in the second source, but I eventually found an item indicating that Malcolm McDowell was, indeed, implicated in the scheme described. I would consider that that counts as a disgrace, so I will accept Malcolm McDowell as a correct answer to the second part of the question.

I found several sources indicating that Gen. Stephen Hurlbut, who did participate at the Battle of Shiloh, was once referred to as a "good, kind-hearted gentleman" by William T. Sherman. However, it appears that Hurlbut was born in South Carolina rather than Ohio, never lived in Iowa or California, and I find no indication that he had a brother.

I have to pass on this one.

ANSWER: John Adair McDowell and Irvin McDowell

SOURCE: https://books.google.com/books?id=THd5AAAAMAAJ&pg=PA432&lpg=PA432&dq=john+adair+mcdowell+civil+war&source=bl&ots=NBIxGuHi4x&sig=G1ISGRCAcD00EkRLwx0TjNllCXE&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj0_aew9MfTAhVkwlQKHbVXDCUQ6AEIVTAO#v=onepage&q=john adair mcdowell civil war&f=false

Edit - The indicated source is sufficient to confirm that John Adair McDowell is the correct answer to the first part of the question, though as far as I can see it doesn't say a word about either one of his brothers. However, other players submitted sources showing that Irvin and Malcolm were brothers of his. Irvin lost a couple of battles and Malcolm was involved in a shady cotton deal, so I guess they both brought some degree of disgrace upon the family name.

Nice to know that Uncle Billy thought that at least one person other than Hurlbut was worthy of being called a good, kind-hearted gentleman.
