Private Peter Pelican of the 36th Illinois Infantry claimed responsibility for firing the fatal shot that killed Brig Gen Benjamin McCulloch at Pea Ridge. Pelican was reportedly the first to reach McCulloch's body and took from the body a gold pocket watch, which he later sold to his colonel. https://www.nps.gov/peri/learn/historyculture/general-mcculloch.htm

I will expand on my earlier answer - A number of soldiers of the 36th fired at at General McCullough. Pelican then ran out, and grabbed the general's watch. It would be more correct to say that Pelican might have been the one to shoot McCullough, but he was definitely the one who stole his watch.

Sharpshooter Peter Pelican of the 36th Illinois Infantry claimed to have fired the shot that killed the multi-talented general.

(The question doesn't ask for the name of the multi-talented general, but it was Benjamin McCulloch.)

The shooting of Brig. Gen. Benjamin McCulloch at Pea Ridge was attributed to Pvt. Peter Pelican of the 36th Illinois Infantry. It was reported as such by division commander Col. Peter J. Osterhaus. Hower McCulloch was hit by volley fire from skirmishers, not being clear who made the lucky shot, and Pelican was just the first to reach his body ... and stole his watch which then found its way into the hands of regimental commander Col. Nicholas Greusel.
