When Thaddeus Lowe tested one of his balloons high above Washington on June 16, 1861 that balloon was not only held to the ground by ropes, but also had a telegraph wire attached to it. From his lofty viewpoint, Lowe sent a telegram with this text to President Lincoln, standing below:
"I have the pleasure in sending you this first dispatch ever telegraphed from an aerial station."

1) How high in the air was this "aerial station"
2) What was the name of the balloon from which Lowe sent this telegram?
3) How far could Lowe see from his lofty height?

Edit - I cannot follow this link, but of the sources supplied by the players, some say Lowe could see 50 miles in every direction and some say he could see an area 50 miles in diameter, which would mean he could see 25 miles in every direction. I will accept either answer. I will also accept the answer of approximately 27 miles, which is a close enough approximation to 25 miles.
