I, a Lt Col, was mustered out of service on August 23, 1865 for something I did to a General on August 21st, 1865. I am also remembered for the capture of a well known civil war figure. Who am I, who was the General, and who did I capture?

Friday question: You are Lt. Colonel Joseph Blackburn of the 4th Tennessee Mounted Infantry who captured Confederate guerrilla Champ Ferguson, and was mustered out of the Union army after beating General Joseph Wheeler severely in his hotel room over a grudge related to Wheeler's 1864 "no quarter" order.

Colonel Joseph Hayes Blackburn, Commander 4th Tennessee Mounted Infantry, captured Confederate guerrilla Captain Champ Ferguson on May 26, 1865, in Sparta, Tennessee. In July Ferguson was placed on trial in Nashville for his wartime activities. One of the witnesses who testified on Ferguson's behalf was Confederate Major General Joseph Wheeler. Blackburn, who believed Wheeler had ordered no quarter be given to members of the 4th Tennessee during the War, proceeded to Wheeler's hotel room and assaulted him with a cane on August 21, 1865. Blackburn was reprimanded by Major General George Thomas for "highly reprehensible conduct" and discharged two days later.

    Bonus: Brigadier General Daniel McCallum.

You are Lieutenant Colonel Joseph H Blackburn 4th Tennessee Mounted Infantry US (previously of the 5th TN Cavalry US.)

On August 21, 1865, Blackburn (and another man) forced entry into the hotel room of General Joe Wheeler (formerly CS) at Nashville TN and severely beat him. Wheeler was in town to testify at the trial of Champ Ferguson. Lt Col Blackburn, with his command of cavalry, had captured Champ Ferguson on May 26, 1865 at his home. Presumably, the attack on Wheeler was intended to "discourage" him from testifying. Lt Col Blackburn was publicly reprimanded and mustered out on August 23, 1865.
