Franklin Buchanan, Confederate States Navy, Captain of CSS Virginia at the start of the Battle of Hampton Roads.

Franklin Buchanan-- C. S. Navy Captain and then the only full C.S. Admiral... not to mention former U.S. Navy Captain with a distinguished record, including serving as the very first commandant of the U.S. Naval Academy, skippering one of the vessels of Matthew C. Perry's mission to Japan, and serving as an important member of the controversial Naval Efficiency Board. He'd be worth remembering even if he passed away before the Civil War, but of course his command of the CSS Virginia and later the CSS Tennessee has put him solidly into history.

One of the most capable naval officers to "go South." (Can't resist adding the trivia bit that both men named to the ranks of admirals in the Confederate Navy-- Admiral Buchanan and Rear Admiral Semmes-- were both Marylanders by birth, coincidentally.)
