The New Yorkers have always seemed to me to be the most neatly dressed. Nor do their beards usually seem as wild and bushy as even those of Pennsylvania troops. See how many clean-shaven men there are in these images.

Company G, 22nd New York State Militia pose in column of fours at Harper's Ferry, Virginia in 1862. The structure in the background is armory building 23 at Jackson and Fillmore Streets on Camp Hill. It is still standing and today is used by Virginia Lodge No. 1, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. (Library of Congress)
