This link shows a map that says the Shenandoah Valley has peak fall colors between October 10-20.👍👍👍

Give or take on the weather.

A suggestion for you, Tom, and @archieclement who I know favors this sort of thing: In case it hasn't already been mentioned, Harper's Ferry is the location of an old but evidently satisfactory KOA Campground, located right outside the entrance to Harper's Ferry NHS. My friend and fellow forum member Doug @1863surgeon has stayed there before, though it was decades ago; we saw and passed by it last April, 2018 during our marathon vacation.
I understand they had a cannon there they used to shoot off noon on Saturdays. Don't know if they still do.

Did I read correctly in this thread that the Visitor Center and Observation Tower are closing for repairs?

Yes, you did. According to the NPS, the Observation Tower already is closed - until March 2020.

There's nothing yet on the site regarding the visitor center, though. That was apparently an inside info. It would be a pity if the VC is closed in October; I didn't get to see the movie when I was there this summer so I had been hoping to watch it next year.

I've found one regular hotel at Harper's Ferry, but I've also noticed there's a circa 1840's inn operating near the historic part of town.

Also I believe James N. stayed there as I've noticed in another thread awhile back.
Anywhere IN Harper's Ferry would be virtually impossible - not necessarily because of accommodations, but PARKING - the place is tiny, with narrow streets, and because of the way it's built into the hillside there's no places to park modern vehicles. Also, the inn where we stayed was nice enough, considering, but nowhere big enough to accommodate even as few of us that attended either Ringgold or Vicksburg. And we were forced to park by the river, across the narrow stone street and then down a couple of flights of wooden stairs.

Sounds like a great opportunity for a meeting of the Harvey Hill Society. I would propose we have it at the Old South Mountain Inn, which was used as a Confederate HQ during the battle of of South Mountain.
Except for the fact that inside, the South Mountain Inn has all the subtle charm of what a friend of mine used to call "the Scottish restaurant" - McDonalds.

The 156th Cedar Creek reenactment will be the weekend after the muster, October 17-18. Might be an incentive for some to stay longer and head there too, or for reenactors going to Cedar Creek to travel a week earlier to join the muster.

I've been looking at flights and found a good combination. Now I just have to figure out what else I want to see on that trip across the Pond. Decisions, decisions... why is there so much Civil War history to see?

Please come to Cedar Creek next year!! :D

I honestly was expecting to see as you got closer to the end: "Back in my day we walked uphill both ways in six feet of snow with broken glass on either side." 😁

I have a lot more information on this now that I found out this week. Because of work I wasn't able to post it earlier but I will later. A very quick update. The NPS isn't "hiding" the information but they aren't advertising it openly yet. The contract hasn't been awarded yet but will be at the end of January 2020. So they are telling when asked but aren't openly talking about it because the rangers themselves at the visitors center don't know much more.

My niece and I ate there expecting something wonderfully historic. We had a great crab soup and a wonderful bar tender who did tell us about the history. BUT.... if you didn't have the private docent effect, you'd be sadly disappointed. I think we got the "private" tour because there were only 4 people eating in the whole place and we didn't even have drinks. We had just finished climbing South Mountain and were tired and hungry and I'm sure looked it and he took pity on us.

Similarly, I had seen the Inn back in the days during previous visits and thought it would be a great place; unfortunately, by the time I was actually able to dine there, it had undergone an interior "renovation" that no doubt swept away most of its historicity (a silly word meaning "historical authenticity") - they were obviously more interested in the greenhouse-looking and totally inauthentic "outdoor" glass bubble where they tried to seat us before I insisted on being inside near the hearth, which was probably a mistake. The menu was also blah - just more of what passes for chic - read overpriced - steakhouse fare. We too were both early diners and by ourselves, so the waiter suggested we go upstairs to see the historic exhibits, which consisted of poor portraits or murals in one of the banquet rooms of some of the generals who had fought there. The whole experience was highly disappointing.

There was a motel/hotel somewhere between Harper's Ferry and the Sharpsburg battlefield park that 2nd unit re-enactors had to report to for registering for the filming of the "Fredericksburg" sequences of G's and G's. The NPS firearms experts had to inspect all weapons prior to filming since the scenes of the town fighting was filmed in Harper's Ferry National Park. I showed up to register for that since I'd already done the Chancellorsville stuff. I didn't bring my musket with me. Sorry, they said. Then they said we aren't look for Confederate impressions anyway. All those guys were Hollywood stunt men up on the balconies and in the streets. "Come back and bring your musket and be sure you have a proper Union uniform and you can register for the filming." So I went back to my cabin on the Shenandoah and sulked a bit but then had a great time catching fish and drinking some beer.

I don't recall where exactly this hotel was..........maybe some one else does. It was a big place and there was a lot of people there waiting in line to register both themselves and their weapons.

As one gets older, that viewpoint can turn on a dime! :smile coffee:

About 2 years ago, I was flirting chatting with a cute coworker of mine who was 22. She told me that she could never imagine getting as old as me. Talk about an instant turn off! (I was only 28 at the time!)

Now that I'm turning 31 in a few days, if I sleep even a little off I'm all but handicapped for entire weeks!

I've recently done some coaching work in the schools in that area. I stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Charles Town, WV. It was a standard Hilton property. The place was clean and the folks were very nice.

If I can suggest a hotel, there is the Home2 Suites in Charles Town if we decide to stay in that city. It's set up for professionals and long distance travelers and really great for groups. We get at the Home2 I work at groups that show up for months working at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), construction crews and so forth. Also, I get to stay there for $35! 😀

And I'm not just shilling for the company I work at! Scouts honor! ✋ lol

If we decided to stay there, I could contact them and set it up as a group. Perhaps get a discount for us. No promises but if it's something that people wanted me to check, I can.
