A likely apocryphal tale invented by 1) Confederate Maj. Gen. John B. Gordon who claimed he dismounted and gave water to seriously wounded 2) Brig. Gen. Francis C. Barlow after his brigade of Early's Division had enfiladed and driven off Barlow's division of the Eleventh Corps north of town. It has been proven there is no contemporary evidence to support Gordon's claim, made after Barlow was safely in his grave; Gordon likely made the claim in the postwar spirit of reconciliation.
