Question: I was a member of the USSC and retained my committee position for the entire war. I have the same last name as a vice president of the US. Who am I?

William H. Van Buren had the same last name as Andrew Jackson's Vice President, Martin Van Buren.

Cornelius Rea Agnew is my final answer (though a case could be made for William Holme Van Buren).

Actually there appears to be 2 who qualify for this question, at least according to this article: William H. Van Buren, MD (Martin Van Buren VP 1833-1837) and Cornelius R Agnew, MD (Spiro Agnew VP 1969-1973).

“Commissioners who retained their position for the entire war: Rev. Henry W. Bellows, George Templeton Strong, William H. Van Buren, M.D., Cornelius R. Agnew, M.D., and Wolcott Gibbs.”

Is that the United States Sanitary Commission?

I believe the person you are looking for was William Holme Van Buren, M.D.
Same last name as Martin Van Buren.

"At the outbreak of the late war he took an active part in the formation of the Sanitary
Commission, and remained one of its executive committee until the close of hostilities."

Not sure which, but these two were on the committee for the duration of the war, and both share the names of Vice Presidents.

William H. Van Buren or Cornelius R. Agnew.

    Both areas covered

Hard one for non-Americans, but one of the names sounded familiar from my childhood, so my guess is:

    Cornelius R. Agnew

    Wikipedia says: (highlighting by me)
"The Standing Committee initially consisted of five commissioners who retained their position for the entire war: Henry W. Bellows, George Templeton Strong, William H. Van Buren, M.D., Cornelius R. Agnew, M.D., and Prof. Wolcott Gibbs., M.D."
    https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=United_States_Sanitary_Commission&oldid=765674047

Spiro Agnew, who was the namesake Vice-President, served as your 39th Vice-President from 1969-1973, in the Nixon administration. And even he has a connection to the Civil War because (quote also from Wikipedia):
"Agnew was the second Vice President in United States history to resign, the other being John C. Calhoun" ...
Calhoun who, according to some, laid the foundation for the later Civil War ...
    http://www.historynet.com/john-c-calhoun-he-started-the-civil-war.htm

(I hope I'm not ruining another Trivia question here ... :D)

Vice President and President! Van Buren.
    • WH (William Holme) Van Buren, an American surgeon, retained a USSC committee position throughout the war. He came to the attention of Lincoln after his 1854 translation of a French field surgery manual became standard issue for army surgeons and was offered the position of surgeon general which he declined.
Edit - Correct, Duke Leto I. Welcome to the trivia game and to CivilWarTalk.

There were two men that fit your description.
The Standing Committee initially consisted of five commissioners who retained their position for the entire war: Henry W. Bellows, George Templeton Strong, William H. Van Buren, M.D., Cornelius R. Agnew, M.D., and Wolcott Gibbs.

Per http://archives.nypl.org/mss/3101 there were 5 Sanitary Commissioners who retained their positions for the entire war, Henry W. Bellows, George Templeton Strong, William H. Van Buren, M.D., Cornelius R. Agnew, M.D., and Wolcott Gibbs. Obviously Dr. Van Buren has the same last name as the 8th vice president (under Andrew Jackson) and, following Jackson, the 8th president of the US.

Not mentioned is that, although the Sanitary Commission officers were male, they were mostly figureheads; women (including my avatar, Mary Livermore) did the real organizing!
