Oliver Otis Howard (1830– 1909).
 
No idea about the main question (though I think I remember seeing a thread about the incident and trial in the forums) but the Bonus probably refers to Oliver Otis (O. O.) Howard, AKA "The Christian General", noted Abolitionist, Bible-thumper, tea-totaller, busybody, and commander of the hard-luck Union Eleventh Corps at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Any of those vocations or avocations might've earned such a moniker from his unimpressed soldiery!
