st Battalion South Carolina Artillery, consisting of five companies (A to E), was raised by the State before the formation of the Confederacy and was mustered into the service of the Confederate States in May 1861 under the same enlistment.
Companies F and G were added to the battalion in October and November 1861 and Companies H and
I in
February 1862.

st Regiment South Carolina Artillery was organized March 25, 1862 with these nine companies and Company K the tenth company was formed by S O 231 Dept SC GA FL dated April 12, 1862.
