Hi All,

Forgive me if this question is posted in the wrong section. Does anyone know if each company of the 1st Regiment of Dragoons had a Sergeant Major assigned to it? I ask this question because in Randy Steffen's The Horse Soldier 1776-1943 Volume II: The Frontier, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Indian Wars 1851-1880, on page 23 shows a Company F Sergeant Major and a Private. I know at regimental headquarters there was a Sergeant Major, Quarter Master Sergeant, and I think two more sergeants. Since each company had a First Sergeant, why would it need a Sergeant Major? If you know of a good reference on the 1st Dragoons please let me know. Thank you.

Regards,
Greg

captaindrew is correct; there was only one Sgt Major per Regiment. That said he was not restricted to the Regimental HQ. He could go where he wanted and felt he was needed.
