Just picked up a model 1860 Spencer Carbine very early model. Matching number on barrel and frame. Serial number 14070. In fair to good condition looking for any history on who it might have been issued to. Thanks in advance.

Howdy and welcome. I can't provide any details about your carbine, but it looks like it's in pretty good condition. Lots of people out here would be proud to own it.

Drop in on the Spencer Shooters Society website.. Moderator is called Two Flints and he will be able to tell you if there are any issue records close to your carbine. Spencer were issued in a little bit of a heater skelter way but there is a fair chance you can get a good ideal.. I happen to have serial # 14592 which is likely issued to Company E, 7th Pennsylvania as all the ones just before and just after were. Always nice to find out that information.. Good Luck on that and hope you hit a home run on the ID. At any rate, Spencer carbines were heavily used in the last year of the war and are a must for a carbine collection.

Welcome to our Forum from a fellow Spencer Carbine Admirer! Nice acquisition! Thanks for sharing!

Welcome From The Heart Of Dixie. Nice Spencer. It is not listed in the SRS so the unit owner is lost to time. If you will go to the SEARCH at the top right of the home page and search Spencer there are many great threads here on the Spencer.

Tried to join the Spencer group to contact two flints but the web site says registration is down. Wanted him if possible to run a check on the serial number.

Try again later.. Two Flints has the data on a list and will be able to take a look and see. I have not seen his list but I know only a smaller percentage of Spencers have an actual issue or inventory tag, indicating the unit and possibly the Company it was issued to. In the vast majority of cases its seeing if your serial number comes real close to a group of ID'd guns, giving you the possibility of it also being issued to that unit. Good Luck. The site is a great resource for any Spencer related topics and research. For example.. 14070 may not be recorded but 40066 and 40067 might have been issued to Company D, 4th US Cavalry. That would give you a good possibility that 14070 was too. The other thing is that early numbers (in my opinion) were most likely parts of larger deliveries when entire units or companies were being issued weapons rather than the later numbers when some of the guns were replacement orders for damaged or lost weapons. How is the bore on this one??

Here is THE list with many above and below yours. I have owned many Spencer's over the years and currently have 3 one of which is a direct match. One thing I can tell you is "If it ain't on the list, It ain't on the list" They did NOT come from the factory in order of serial # plus these were transferred from unit to unit such as one of the ones I own being transferred to Gen Croxton. If you look at the issue for the 7th Penn Cav you will see that are NOT in order.

Many thanks for all of your work. The ones which were sent out west after the war are they on another list. Were they all model 1865s.
