Up for sale is an original ames model 1860 dated 1859. This is an already rare ames sword but with Cavalry company state markings. Inscribed is "Company A 4th Illinois volunteer Cavalry " also inscribed on the blade is us symbol and shield plus a lot of designs. The scabbard is not just smooth and plain there is artistic designs on the tip and belt loops. The sword was purchased from a civil war dealer in the south. I just noticed this old post and sure it is long been sold but I am curious about it.
I have never seen an ames 1860 with a unit name etched into the blade. I presume it would have been done after the war? Any thoughts about this particular 1859 dated cavalry saber?
 
That's a definitely a valuable relic. Company "A" of the 4th Illinois Cavalry was a detached escort to General Grant from November, 1861, to August, 1863. My own 4th great grandpa was in Company D of the 4th.

Out of curiosity, where did you get the saber?
