From the Alabama Department of Archives and History

The 14th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized July 1861. The majority of its members were from Chambers county (5 companies) but there were also members from Montgomery and Auburn, and the counties of Randolph, Lowndes, Talladega, and Tallapoosa. Organized at Auburn, Alabama, under Colonel Thomas James Judge, Lieutenant Colonel David W. Baine, and Major Mickleberry Ferrell, and sent to Huntsville.

The Companies

Company A "Cusseta Grays" (Chambers County)
Company B "Moore Guards" (Lowndes County)
Company C "Tom Watt's Grays" (Chambers County)
Company D "Yancey Grays" (Chambers County)
Company E "Gilmore's Greys" (Chambers County)
Company F "Billy Gilmer Grays" (Chambers County)
Company G "Hillabee Blues" (Tallapoosa County)
Company H "Jackson Avengers" (Tallapoosa County)
Company I "Hillabee Rifles" (Talladega County)
Company K "Louina Guards" (Randolph County)
Company L "Texas Invincibles" (no idea)

The regiment was ordered to Virginia and arrived at Fredericksburg in November 1861. On November 20, Major Ferrell resigned due to illness and Owen K. McLemore (an 1856 graduate of West Point) was promoted to major. On January 5, 1862, the regiment was ordered to Richmond in order to recover after suffering from disease in camp. General Holmes wrote “The regiment has suffered greatly from measles.”

In March of 1862, the regiment joined Magruder at Yorktown and by April 30 was assigned to Pryor’s Brigade, Longstreet’s Division with about 700 effectives. On May 7, Major McLemore was transferred to the 4th Alabama. In the Seven Days Battles, the regimental casualties were 70 killed and 253 wounded. In the Battle of Frasier's Farm, Gen. Roger A. Pryor wrote: The Fourteenth Alabama bore the brunt of the struggle and was nearly annihilated.

The 14th Alabama participated in the Battles of Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, and Sharpsburg before being assigned to Wilcox's brigade, Anderson's division - with the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th Alabama regiments - for the Battle of Fredericksburg. At Gettysburg, the 14th lost 8 killed and 40 wounded out of 316 men engaged.

After the Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, the regiment was assigned to Sander's Brigade, Mahone's Division and participated in the Siege of Petersburg and the Battle of Ream's Station. At Appomattox, the regiment surrendered 11 officers and 180 men.

According to Lee's Grenadier Guard by Harold B. Simpson, the Texas Invincibles were temporarily assigned to the 14th Alabama as Company L until they officially became Company K of the 1st Texas Infantry on April 16, 1862. They were from San Augustine County, Texas. In turn, an Alabama company, the Daniel Boon Rifles, were temporarily attached to the 1st Texas as Company K until transferred to the 5th Alabama Battalion as Company D. I believe this was all just on paper and the companies were actually independent until they officially joined a unit of their own state.

This flag is an Army of Northern Virginia, 7th wool bunting Richmond Depot flag issued to the regiment in March or early April 1865. It was surrendered by the remnant of the 14th Alabama Infantry on April 12, 1865 at Appomattox. The flag was eventually forwarded to the War Department where it was assigned Capture Number 347. The flag and its staff were returned to the State of Alabama effective March 25, 1905. The staff, which had been separated from the flag, was located and positively identified in July, 1998.

Sorry for recycling an ancient topic, but I just found out that my great-great-great grandfather was a member of the 14th Alabama (Company I, Hillabee Rifles). According to his tombstone, he served with the 14th from 1862-1865. So I don't know if he was ever wounded or missed any of the engagements the 14th Alabama was part of. Is there a way to find that information online?

If you don't mind sharing your 3x great grandfather's name, that information can be found at Fold3. Its a pay site, but there are several folks here who have access and are always happy to pull service records.

What was their Gettysburg story, please? Sorry to side track the thread. When going there, it's always one, more thing that gives you chills when you see who was there. It's CWT and the only place you can say that without anyone looking at you funny.
