This Bay Stater was quite the rage,
as a clown he played on the stage.
He was there every night,
until he heard a call to fight.

With the 8th New York he marched away,
was at Bull Run on that first day.
Not to worry - his life’s not done,
a 90 day enlistment and off he’d run.

Back to the stage he loved so dear,
to master his craft gave him cheer.
And on the stage he was doing fine,
until that night he ran out of time.

“Humpty Dumpy” he played as a clown,
all was good and then he fell down.
All of his doctors and all of his friends,
couldn’t put him back together again.

1. Who Am I?
2. What Was the Highest Rank I Obtained in the 8th New York?

1) George Washington Lafayette Fox
2) Major of the 8th New York Infanty

This Massachusetts native played his clown act at different theaters throughout the east but during the Civil War he was a Major in the 8th New York Infantry, served at the First Battle of Bull Run and mustered out in August 1861. One of his most memorable characters was his critically acclaimed performance as “Humpty Dumpty”. He died after he suffered a terrible fall on stage during a performance breaking his nose and damaging an optic nerve. His injuries could never be put right again and as a result he began to experience erratic behavior until he suffered a series of strokes and died at fifty-two.

George L. Fox was a Lt. in the NY 8th. Collapsed on stage and died of blood poisoning caused by the white lead makeup he wore as Humpty Dumpty
