I was a Midshipman in 1818 and retired 48 years later. My son had the same name as mine and was the first to receive a diploma from the US Naval Academy. We were the first father and son to be concurrently living Rear Admirals in history of the US Navy. Who am I?

"Their elder son, Yates Stirling, Jr. (1872–1948), also became a rear admiral in the Navy, making them only the second family in the history of the U.S. Navy to have father and son rear admirals concurrently living.[2] The first were Rear Admirals Thomas O. Selfridge, Sr. and Junior. "

His son with the same name:

Not part of the question but I found it interesting. One of Selfridge's grandsons (and Jr's nephews), also named Thomas, has the unhappy distinction of being the first American serviceman to die in an airplane crash while on active duty. Orville Wright was piloting the plane. This particular Selfridge was also in the same West Point class as Douglas MacArthur.

Thomas Oliver Selfridge

In 1867, he was promoted to the rank of rear admiral on the retired list to date from 25 July 1866 in honor of his long and distinguished career. When his son, Thomas O. Selfridge Jr. was promoted to rear admiral on February 28, 1896, they became the first father and son to be living when they were both U.S. Navy admirals.
