Hi

I've been trying to locate the grave of my ancestor Jason Figg of the 11th Tennessee. Fold 3 has his enlistment records and I think he was killed at the Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 22, 1864. I have checked with the folks at the Confederate Cemetery in Atlanta. Any help I can get would be appreciated.

Do you know for certain he was killed in action ? What does the last file card in his record say ? Was his middle initial L ? There is a household in Lincoln County, Tennessee headed by a J.L. Figg. Born about 1834 in the 1870 census.

The best information I have is from and extensive family tree my uncle did. Jason and his father James Jefferson Figg fought for the Confederacy and Robert Morgan Figg, a brother fought for the Union. The 11th Tennessee website I found lists Jason as a musician and the NPS site confirms but does not list a KIA. Fold 3 does have his record and it appears as if his last payday was June 30 but the year is not visible.Expired Image Removed

Says the 11th and 29th were consolidated in the later part of 1864. If he's not in that muster roll, he was probably killed in action and buried as an unknown, probably on the battlefield with no record. Though one would think he would be at least listed as " missing. " Late in the war a lot of the men in the Army of Tennessee simply left and went home. They'd had enough ! I did locate a James Figg 6th Ky Mounted Rifles Confederate and a Union Robert Figg 16th Illinois Infantry.

Thanks, that's about the same info I've been able to come up with and is consistent with our family records.

Not much action on this! I got the new book about the Battle of Peach Tree Creek and Jason is not listed on the casualty roster. It looks like my uncle got it wrong when he said Jason was killed the 22nd at Peach Tree Creek.

Welcome to the forum from Atlanta. I can empathize with your situation in that I am looking for the final resting place of an ancestor; knowing exactly were and when he died, but not knowing where. Best wishes with your quest.

I have looked at a better copy of the family tree and it says Jason and Robert fought for the Confederacy and James Jefferson for the Union. It now looks like Robert M Figg was with the 1st Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry (McNairy's) .

I am beginning to think this may be the best I can do and it is pretty good indeed. 3000 unknown Confederate dead in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. Jason was most likely killed in the horrific assault on Bald Hill in the afternoon of July 22.
