I tried unsuccessfully to enlist in the Union army at the age of 12. I served as a regimental drummer boy and was finally allowed to enlist. I became the youngest non-commissioned officer in the history of the U.S. Army and ultimately retired as a major general and the last Civil War veteran on active duty.
