main: unknown and not much to work with. i read a story of a soldier who carried a good luck gold coin that deflected a bullet .

bonus: Meriwether Jeff Thompson. Thompson's battalion soon became known as the "Swamp Rats" for their exploits. He gained renown as the "Swamp Fox of the Confederacy."

Main question: Seems like there could be an awful lot of possibilities for an odd-ball good luck charm that somebody's mother could have given him.

I will take a wild guess and say it was a banjo carried by J. E. B. Stuart.

Bonus: You are Meriwether Jeff Thompson, general in the Missouri State Guard.

Great question! After an exhaustive search, I'm going with the first person shown below--PATRICK CLEBURNE.
I failed to find the OP view of him but as they say "If it isn't Cleburne, it should be." My second choice was Felix Zollicoffer who certainly looks like the OP photo. (A distant third chice for me would have been the Nathan Bedford statue, also below.)
