Maybe you’ve carried a rabbit’s foot for luck or made a wish on a turkey wishbone. But you’ve probably never carried this good luck charm, given to a Confederate officer by his mother. What was the item and who was the officer?

The good luck charm was a small hambone given to Confederate officer A. P. Hill, upon his departure of West Point, by his mother.

Bonus: Meriwether Jeff Thompson, "Swamp Fox of the Confederacy", commanded the First Military District of Missouri, which covered the swampy southeastern quarter of the state. How ironic, that he would succumb to tuberculosis after his attempts to tame the Louisiana swamps during the post-War era.

General Ambrose Powell Hill carried a hambone given to him by his mother as a good luck charm.

A. P. Hill’s good luck charm was a ham bone that he received from his mother as a keepsake. He carried it for most of his life and was rumored to be without it on the day he died.

Ambrose P. Hill (1825-1865) always carried a small ham bone given him by his mother as a good luck charm when he left home for West Point in 1842.
Meriwether J. Thompson (aka M. Jeff Thompson) (1826-1876).
