The evening before The Battle of Gettysbuburg was to take place, a soldier sitting on the doorstep of a family's home asked a young girl playing outside who lived there if she would give him a kiss since she reminded him of his daughter who he thought he might not see again. After asking her mother she did so and he gave her a handkerchief which she kept until her death.

What was the girl's name and what was depicted on the handkerchief?

She was: 7-year Emma Yount (if spell check makes Young - the name ends with a “t”)
Depicted: a picture of “George Washington in the corner, and bordered with stripes of red, white and blue, with small crossed flags in each cover”. It is also is inscribed with the words “Union Forever” beneath an eagle.

She is Emma Yount and the handkerchief is decorated with a portrait of George Washington.

Note: My device's autocorrect keeps misspelling her last name as Young. If I have not successfully defeated it above please note the spelling should be Y-o-u-n-t. Thank you!

Emma Yount.
"Before leaving, the cavalryman gave young Emma a silk handkerchief he was carrying that featured George Washington's image and patriotic border and flags."

The girl's nsme was Emma Yount, daughter of innkeeper Israel Yount
The handkerchief had the image of George Washington, a patriotic border and flags

"The troopers dismounted and lounged in the town while awaiting further orders. During that time, the seven year old daughter of innkeeper Israel Yount, Emma, was playing outside their home when a cavalryman asked her to come and visit with him while he was resting. The cavalryman told her that he missed his young daughter at home and asked if little Emma would hug and kiss him on the cheek to remind him of his daughter, who he felt he might not ever see again. Emma asked her mother if she could do as the cavalryman suggested, and her mother considered the circumstances and allowed Emma to do so. Before leaving, the cavalryman gave young Emma a silk handkerchief he was carrying that featured George Washington's image and patriotic border and flags. Emma kept that handkerchief until her death in 1946 ..."
