"Slow Trot" George Thomas

Edit - Thomas acquired the nickname "Slow Trot" while he was a cavalry and artillery instructor at West Point in the early 1850's, not because he was habitually late for anything, but because he instructed the cadets not to overwork the Academy's elderly horses. As far as I know, he never was nicknamed "Tardy George."

It appears that you played the trivia game once before, but I never got around to welcoming you to the game. A belated welcome, and hope you'll come back and play again.

sorry, I again already purged the answers. I clearly have a bad bout of brain fog, paired with too much going on.

Edit - Most players answered with George Sykes, so my guess is that he was the official correct answer. Sources have been presented indicating that George McClellan was also referred to as "Tardy George," so I will give credit for that answer as well.
