At one of the battles he was wounded four times, but would not leave his troops til he was shot in the face. His wife nursed him for seven months, and when he returned to duty, General Lee requested his promotion to brigadier general.

During the Battle of Antietam Colonel Gordon was wounded 4 times and struggled to continue to lead his men, until a 5th minnie ball went through his left cheek and shattered his jaw. He noted later that he might have drowned in his own blood had not a "thoughtful Yankee" earlier given the hat a bullet hole that allowed the blood to drain out. In an out of consciousness he crawled 100 yards to the Confederate line where he finally passed out.
His wife Fanny travelled along following his military campaigns, nursed him back to health which took 7 months. After recuperating from his wound, Gordon was promoted to Brigadier General and given command of a brigade of Georgia regiments.

Edit - JFW22, I see that you answered both the Oct. 8 and Oct. 11 questions, but I didn't realize at the time that you hadn't played before.

So here's a belated welcome to the trivia game. Glad to see you're continuing to play.
