    QUESTION:
    I hold a grave distinction
    Near Warrenton’s fields and farms:
    The first Confederate officer
To fall in clash of arms.

    In June of eighteen sixty-one
    I led a company
Of brave Virginia lads who fought
    For home and liberty.

    Although I’d taught at VMI
    And voted for secession
I went home to care for family
    And left my proud profession.

    On that fateful, bloody day
I had no more than forty
    Warriors brave, steadfast, and true
    To halt the Yankee sortie.

    The enemy cavalry cheered aloud
    Prepared to ride us down
My men and I stood ready to
    Defend the little town.

“What cavalry is that?” I called
    With proud, defiant breath
The only answer a burst of fire
Then dark, and cold, and death.

I knew no more and didn’t watch
    The blue invaders flee
Or hear the shouts of triumph
    For Confederate victory.

    Near busy modern byways
    Once flaming fields of war
A plaque now stands to mark my death
And the cause I suffered for.
    While few will now remember
    Who struggled here or why
    I’ll always be remembered as
    The first Southron to die.

    Who am I?

    JOHN QUINCY MARR

    As a postscript:
Charles Henry Tompkins received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fairfax Court House (June 1861). His was the first action of a Union Army officer in the American Civil War for which a Medal of Honor was awarded. His citation reads: "Twice charged through the enemy's lines and, taking a carbine from an enlisted man, shot the enemy's captain."[Captain Marr].

A monument to Captain Marr was erected on June 1, 1904 near the front of the courthouse where it remains today. It reads: "This stone marks the scene of the opening conflict of the war of 1861–1865, when John Q. Marr, captain of the Warrenton Rifles, who was the first soldier killed in action, fell 800 feet south, 46 degrees West of the spot. June 1, 1861." (Erected by the Marr Camp, C.V., June 1, 1904.)

He should be John Quincy Marr.

Poem first asks for the first Confederate officer to die. Later on it says first Southron to die.

Legend has Private Henry L. Wyatt is the first Confederate non officer to die. But Marr meets all the question criteria in the well done poem. So Marr is my final answer.

A difficult riddle to begin the day
That helps keep the senses keener
Now a new one hits the screen
From our CW friend, am weiner

Not an easy puzzle - to be sure
Because every state wants the glory
Of offering their son to sacrifice
So they can lay claim to the story

But pushing aside the political claims
We learn of a Virginia battle
That would take the life of one from each side
Before the Union cavalry would skedaddle

On a darkened road in Fairfax Court
That evening the first of June
Lay the body of one who would not rise
As would happen to so many more soon

36 year old Captain John Q Marr
Is the person your riddle describes
Just the first of many who would pay the price
As many ... many ....many more thousands would die.

    Very nice work am!
