This trivia question leads to an interesting conundrum. On May 24, 2017, in a thread entitled
Northerners Mourn Confederate Losses; Humanity In The Shambles Of War
Discussion in 'Battle of Gettysburg' started by JPK Huson 1863, post # 3, JPK Huson writes that "Churches in Gettysburg split a total of $500 bucks, from the government, for damages- blood soaked pews and floors- they were hospitals".
My conundrum is due to a missing "s". Today's trivia question refers to a church, not churches. Is this question referring to a single church or to numerous churches? I find it hard to believe that the question of today is not referencing the post of May 24, 2017. The wording is almost exactly the same.

My answer to this question must be "Gettysburg Churches" which is in the plural, not singular.

I'm guessing... Dunker Church in Antietam, because it was so bloody. Actually, if this $500 was given immediately postwar, that would have been a hefty sum, given the fact a entire church could be built for less than $2000 in mid-late 19th Century..

Is this maybe a tricky one?
Annie in these threads you said yourself that all Gettysburg churches had to share these 500 Dollars to replace all the damage that came from using them as hospitals...

"Read other churches in town had a lot ruined by blood, all the poor wounded brought there. And that the churches all split a very small payment- 500 dollars, to renew what was lost"

"All the churches in town for instance, ruined beyond easy repair caring for wounded, received 500 dollars to split among them."

"Getting losses covered was a joke- government failed badly. 500 bucks to share among alllll the churches, for instance"
https://civilwartalk.com/threads/dr-j-w-c-oneal-gettysburgs-virginian.149230/#post-1881533

"All the churches together received only 500- to split"
https://civilwartalk.com/threads/ex...ad-union-and-confederate.142082/#post-1733254

"So what if finally the government paid up on losses , post battle? All the churches combined were given 500 bucks to split, that's it. They'd been hospitals, wounded from North and South were carried there. Those losses were shattering- blood soaked pews, floors carpets, broken windows- the 500 bucks may have replaced paper for weekly bulletins."

"All the churches in Gettysburg combined had to share 500 bucks, for instance, a tiny fraction given replacing bloodstained pews alone from use as hospitals"
https://civilwartalk.com/threads/civil-war-battlefield-tourism-the-early-years.126262/#post-1371238

"Bliss, along with most farmers was never to receive compensation for the massive losses sustained, all the churches together in Gettysburg, having opened their doors to wounded, blood soaked, shot riddled, begrimed and stripped, received 500 dollars, to be split among all."

.... and some more.

So my answer is: not one church, ALL Gettysburg churches had to share that money.
