Already of advanced age, at the start of the Civil War, I enlisted in the Union Army as a chaplain, in the same New York regiment as my son. Present at the battle of First Bull Run, I narrowly escaped injury. Mustered out in 1863, I joined the Sanitary Commission. Coming across my son who had been severely wounded at the Battle of Bethesda Church, I escorted him on a hospital ship. While trying to obtain water I fell into the Potomac River and was never seen again. My son died shortly afterwards.

Rev. Gordon Winslow (1803-1864), father of Cleveland Winslow (1836-1864). Both men served in the Fifth New York Volunteer Infantry, Cleveland as Colonel, Gordon as Chaplain. (A second, younger son, Gordon Jr. (1838-1896) was also an officer in the same regiment. A Captain, he was breveted Major by war's end.)
