This South Carolina native studied law and in 1842 was admitted to the South Carolina Bar. His military service began during
the Mexican-American war, where he was wounded. During the Civil War he acquired more battle scars, being injured during
the Battles of the Seven Days, Bull Run, Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania. He was promoted to Brigadier General in January 1863.
Post-war he returned to his native state, was elected to Congress in 1865 and later served on his state's Supreme Court.
