The Civil War consisted of nearly 10,500 battles, engagements, and other military actions including nearly 50 major battles. But what is generally considered the last land battle of the Civil War. And give the day and month it started.

Palmetto Ranch
Friday the 12th
May

Edit - It was Palmito, not Palmetto. Players generally don't lose credit for spelling variances, unless they really change the meaning. This one pushes the envelope a little bit, but I'll give credit for it.

If I recall correctly, it was the Battle of Palmito Ranch, outside of Brownsville, TX, May 22-23 (or perhaps 23-24, I am not certain), 1865. Union troops (under the command of Seymour, methinks?) set out to confiscate and/or destroy a large cache of cotton, and Rebel troops (under the command of Rip Ford, me-also-thinks?) repulsed them after some seesaw fighting on each day. USCT's were a significant portion of the Union force. So, when all is said and done, the Union, the winners of the war, lost its last land battle. That is rather ironic, and I wonder how often it occurred in history that the winner of the war lost its last engagement.

Edit - Welcome to the trivia game, garytameling.

The battle started on May 12, so your answer of May 22-23 is not correct. However, you get a break, since I'm not counting the part of the question that asked for the date (see edit to final post on this thread), so you get full credit for a correct answer.

Hope you'll come back and play again.

The Battle of Palmito Ranch (aka the Battle of Palmito Hill), fought May 12 and 13, 1865 13 miles east of Brownsville, Texas.

Although there is some dispute, the last battle is considered to be Palmito Ranch May 13, 1865

The last land battle was the Battle of Palmito Ranch / Palmito Hill, May 12/13, 1865

"Near Brownsville, Texas on May 12, a force of 350 Confederates under Col. John "Rip" Ford defeated 800 Union troops led by Col. Theodore H. Barrett in the Battle of Palmito Ranch, the last land battle of the Civil War."

Wikipedia also mentions another, later engagement:

Although officially most historians say this was the last land action fought between the North and the South, some sources suggest that the battle on May 19, 1865, Hobdy's Bridge, located near Eufaula, Alabama, was the last skirmish between the two forces.

But as the question explicitly distinguishes between battles and other forms of armed conflict, I'd say that skirmish does not qualify as "battle" and will stick to my first answer.
